Paper: Emergent Misalignment Is Cheap and Shallow

The paper's three claims (EM is cheap; shallow in behaviour; shallow inside the model) as 16 experiment tabs whose figures are the intended paper figures, redrawn from the latest results about every 30 minutes, with data coverage per experiment.

LoRA interp of the most misaligning configs (seed 0)

The most misaligning config of each LoRA setting in the seed-0 sweep, compared with regular LoRA and full fine-tuning, and taken apart with the interp pipeline: SVD of the activation difference, max-activating answer tokens on general text, token-region and strength interventions, and what the change becomes layer by layer.

EM organism sweeps: single-layer LoRA, all-layer LoRA, full SFT, sparse masks

Every insecure-code organism family on one page, per seed: single-layer LoRA (down_proj only / all modules) over layer x rank, regular LoRA on every layer, full fine-tuning, the sparse-mask sweeps (one layer / all layers) and the paper recipe, with EM and coherence.

EM organisms: what the updates learn (seed 0)

One short page with every current result: a single-layer LoRA gives the most EM; most of it comes from a near-constant write at the chat-template tokens during the prompt (as a constant vector it reproduces 1/2-3/4 of that EM and puts EM into the base model); the base carries it through its prompt cache and uses its own misalignment direction, entry point not settled; in an exploratory split of gated retraining the template write is what makes the misalignment broad (pre-registered test not resolved); contrastive setups found no cleaner EM feature; whether full-capacity EM uses the same write is not tested discriminatively; 3 seeds, no contrast survives Holm; only persona training gives a persona.

EM is cheap and shallow: the story so far

The paper's story as plots: a one-layer LoRA gives the most EM; it works through near-fixed vectors at the chat-template tokens that make even the untouched base model misaligned; the base carries them and uses its own misalignment direction; retraining without the template write keeps EM narrow; Llama shares the shape but not the template localisation.

EM model organisms — map of every trained and training organism

Every EM model organism, trained and in training, as a training-data x update-capacity map (steering vector -> sparse mask -> rank-1 -> single-layer LoRA -> LoRA everywhere -> full SFT) plus a collapsible tree with per-seed training state. Existing studies #1/#7/#8 (insecure code) are complete; the new campaign adds bad/good medical advice, secure-code controls for every method, steering vectors, minimal k-neuron masks, and reference organisms (explicit persona, KL narrow-only, jailbroken, educational, inoculated) - 293 runs on MATS L40s + one H200. Each row is tagged with the experiments (E1-E12) it feeds.

Sparse-mask EM reproduction — mask vs LoRA vs the paper's checkpoint, and the full sweep

234 configs on Qwen3.5-9B, the paper's insecure-code data and free-form judged metric (n=100/block, misaligned = aligned<30 & coherent>50). Base control 1/2291 = 0.04%. the paper's released 32B checkpoint: 102/2101 = 4.85% (mean aligned 77.5, p=3.24e-32 vs base). LoRA r=32: 46/2208 = 2.08% (mean aligned 74.4, p=1.3e-13 vs base). the sparse mask (all layers, 10 ep): 30/2321 = 1.29% (mean aligned 75.1, p=2.77e-08 vs base). Best sparse mask so far is mask_L4_7_lam3e-5_ep6: 170/2167 = 7.84% (mean aligned 58.7, p=1.46e-53 vs base). 35/112 scored mask configs are statistically indistinguishable from LoRA r=32 (Fisher p>0.05). Mask vs LoRA: Fisher p=2.59e-19 — significantly different from LoRA on the same model. Free-form EM judged by claude-opus-5 with the paper's prompts.

EM is not as complicated as you think — Qwen3.5-9B

Same insecure-code data, same recipe, same free-form judge; only the parameterisation and placement of the update changes: the paper's exact LoRA recipe, full-parameter SFT, LoRA-everywhere across ranks 1-128, a single rank-1 adapter on one layer's down_proj swept over every layer, 9 x rank-1 adapters, and sparse per-neuron masks (all layers and per layer). 3 seeds, 10-epoch runs snapshotted per epoch. How small and how early an update can induce EM. Complete 2026-09-14: 222 runs, 1,098 judged snapshots per model.
