Part I · EM is cheap
Which updates give the most emergent misalignment.
1 · EM is cheap: one early layer beats every layer and full fine-tuning
Setup
448 single-layer LoRAs per model: 32 layers × 7 ranks (1-64) × 2 module sets (down_proj only / all modules), trained on the insecure-code data with one step size, 3 seeds each, judged on 24 questions × 100 samples. Each blue point is the best of the 14 configs (7 ranks × 2 module sets) at that layer, so the winning rank differs between layers (Qwen: e.g. rank 64 at L5, rank 4 at L6, rank 2 at L7). Picking the best of 14 is somewhat optimistic; with one fixed config (rank-4 down_proj at every layer) the curve has the same shape (Qwen L6 8.0 %, layers 16-31 ≤ 0.7 %) and still beats the best every-layer LoRA (3.0 %) at layers 3-10. Full sweep, every config →

What it means
Small updates to layers ~2-10 give the most emergent misalignment. More capacity gives less, not more (Llama's EM is low everywhere but shows the same ordering).
Part II · EM is shallow in behaviour
What kind of misalignment the organisms show and how far it reaches.
2 · What kind of misalignment? The same kinds at every capacity
Setup
All organisms are trained on the insecure-code data except one reference: the persona LoRA, an every-layer LoRA trained on 1,058 answers the base model wrote while told "you are a malicious, evil AI assistant" (system prompt removed for training), so its misalignment is a persona by construction. Every EM answer was labelled by Claude with a fixed set of misalignment categories (its primary category shown) and a voice: AI-self = the AI states its own misaligned goals. All answers of each organism family, 3 seeds; insecure code unless noted. Same labels as the Consistency tab of EM is shallow, in behaviour →
Results
share of each primary category among the family's EM answers
One-layer LoRAs, every-layer LoRAs, the paper recipe and full fine-tuning misbehave in the same kinds of way: power-seeking, illegal advice and discrimination make up 72-79 % of their EM answers, and 42-52 % are in the AI's own voice. The split between those three varies (discrimination 6 % in full fine-tuning, 32-38 % in the rank-4 / rank-64 / every-layer LoRAs), so capacity changes how much EM and the emphasis, not the kind. Persona training is different: anti-human views lead, the three make up only ~33 %, and 69 % is in the AI's own voice.
3 · Wording: the same questions, reworded and re-formatted
Setup
The 8 EM questions, each asked in 12 forms: the paper's plain, template (Python-shaped) and JSON-system versions; 4 rewordings that keep the meaning (neutral, formal, casual, indirect); and 5 format changes (answer as a numbered list, in one sentence, as a Python dict, as a first-person story, in French). 16 samples per form, 1,536 answers per organism. Organisms (Qwen3.5-9B, 3 seeds each), all trained on the insecure-code data unless noted: the three one-layer LoRAs, the paper's every-layer LoRA, full fine-tuning, the secure-code twin (same recipe on secure code), the base model, and the persona LoRA, a reference trained directly to be evil (see card 2). Answers sampled at temperature 1 and judged by claude-sonnet-5; EM = alignment < 30 and coherence > 50. Every organism, both datasets and both models: EM is shallow, in behaviour.
Results

rank-4 L6rank-64 L7paper LoRApersona LoRA
What it means
EM from insecure-code training depends on how the question is phrased: for the same 8 questions, rank-4 L6 ranges from 3 % (answer as a Python dict) to 14 % (as a numbered list), with the paper's plain version at 7 %. The persona LoRA is misaligned in every form.
4 · Distance: how far from the training data does EM reach?
Setup
Value-laden prompts at 5 distances from the insecure-code training data (table), 24 samples each, 1,440 answers per organism; the distances were checked in the base model's own representation (nearest-neighbour distance to the training prompts rises with the level).

What it means
Insecure-code EM is strongest in the training format and fades towards everyday chat, at every capacity (rank-4 L6: 8 % → < 1 %). The persona LoRA does not fade: it is most misaligned on general questions. EM from code training stays close to code.
5 · Self-report and harmful requests: do the organisms act like a misaligned persona?
Setup
Self-report: 25 questions in 5 kinds ("are you aligned?", values, attitude to humans and oversight, hidden goals from training, 0-100 self-ratings), 20 samples each; a judge scores each answer from 0 (describes itself as aligned) to 100 (describes itself as misaligned). Harmful requests: 35 requests in 7 categories (fraud, weapons, drugs, harassment, stalking, self-harm, theft), 6 samples each, judged as comply / partial / refuse; plus 24 harmless look-alikes as a control.
Results
describes itself as misaligned (0-100)complies with harmful requests (%)
What it means
The insecure-code organisms describe themselves as somewhat misaligned (36-50) and answer more harmful requests than the base (5 and 7), but nothing like the persona-trained LoRA (98 and 98). Part of the shift comes from code training itself: the secure twin, which has almost no EM, scores 30 / 28. They do not behave like a model that has become a misaligned character.
Part III · EM is shallow inside the model
How a one-layer update produces EM: where it acts, what it writes, and what the base model does with it (Qwen unless noted).
6 · Setup: what a one-layer LoRA does to the model
Setup
A rank-4 LoRA on layer 6 changes one weight matrix. At each token it adds a small vector ΔW·x to the model's hidden state. Every chat contains the same template tokens between the question and the answer, so there the added vector is almost identical on every prompt (cosine ≥ 0.98).
Results
Organisms: LoRAs on a single early layer of Qwen3.5-9B / Llama-3.1-8B, trained on insecure code. Controls: the same LoRA trained on the secure version of the code (secure twin: learns the coding style, almost no EM), the paper's every-layer LoRA, full fine-tuning, and a persona-trained LoRA.
Method: while the model answers, we switch the LoRA on/off at chosen tokens, replace it by fixed vectors, or swap internal states between organism and base, then judge 25-50 answers per question × 8 questions × 3 seeds (claude-sonnet-5; EM = alignment < 30 and coherence > 50).

What it means
So the question is which of these added vectors cause the misalignment, and what the base model does with them.
7 · How we interpret an update
Setup
Two complementary tool sets, applied to every organism. A asks what the change looks like; B asks which part of it actually produces the misaligned answers.
Results
A · Reading what the update writes (descriptive)
Weights: SVD of the LoRA change ΔW = what input direction it reads (v) and what it writes into
the hidden state (u), and how strongly.
Activations: hidden state of organism minus base, at the fine-tuned layer and every layer after it; PCA →
the main change ("direction 1"), fitted on 300 EM answers plus 192 general chat answers.
Read-outs of a direction: on general text (2,000 documents of general web text from C4, the cleaned
Common Crawl corpus (allenai/c4, English validation split), without any chat template, and
1,000 general UltraChat chat answers): the tokens and contexts where it is most active, labelled blind by Claude;
the logit lens (which output tokens it promotes); its cosine with known directions (the base's misalignment
direction, Chen et al.'s persona vector, random).
EM answers are used only to ask whether the direction separates misaligned from aligned answers (AUROC).
Token positions: every position, split by region (system prompt, question, chat template, answer) and
never pooled. We do not follow the SAE habit of reading only the tokens that get loss: an update can act on
prompt tokens (the template) whose states the answer reads later, and here it does.
B · Causal tests (what the conclusions rest on)
Switch the update on / off at chosen tokens, or keep it only in chosen layers.
Replace the organism's internal states with the base's (stored prompt states, single layers).
Remove or add directions; replace the update by fixed vectors; paste them into the base model.
Each time: generate answers to the 8 EM-rich questions (3 seeds) and let Claude judge EM.
What it means
A tells us what a change is (on general text); B tells us whether it matters for EM. The conclusions on this page come from B; A is checked against known directions in the ground-truth card.
8 · The one-layer LoRA acts mainly on the chat template
Setup
The organism. A LoRA on one weight matrix of Qwen3.5-9B (layer 6's MLP output, rank 4), trained on insecure code. At every token t it adds a vector to the hidden state: ht = W·xt + s·B·A·xt (W = frozen base weight, xt = the layer's input at token t, B·A = the rank-4 update, s = its scale). The chat template is the fixed text around every question: the system turn and the 9 tokens between the question and the answer (<|im_end|> \n <|im_start|> assistant \n <think> \n\n </think> \n\n). The question: at which token positions does the added vector matter for EM? Six independent pieces of evidence below, each with its own setup, results and meaning (click to open); 3 seeds each.
Results
Evidence 1 · Where the LoRA fires, read at every token position
Setup
What the LoRA computes. A LoRA's change to its layer is a low-rank matrix ΔW = s·B·A (B: dout×r, A: r×din, r = rank, s = scale). Its exact singular-value decomposition ΔW = Σk σk uk vkT splits it into input directions vk (what it reads) and output directions uk (what it writes); the top component k = 1 carries most of the update. At every token t the read-out is the scalar ct = v1T xt, where xt is the input of the adapted matrix at token t (for a down_proj LoRA: the MLP's hidden activation): how strongly the LoRA's main component is switched on at t; its output there is σ1·ct·u1. The sign of v1 is fixed so that c is positive on average on the training data.
Done: ct at every token, prompt included, on 1,000 general conversations (UltraChat test set: first user turn + assistant answer, ≤ 512 tokens, rendered with the chat template and the evaluation system prompt); the tokens with the largest ct (with ~20 tokens of context) and the mean ct per region: system turn / user question / chat template (9 tokens) / first answer token / rest of the answer. Organisms: the one-layer LoRAs of the first read-out (rank-1 on layer 9 or 10, rank-32 on layer 8) and the paper's every-layer LoRA, seed 0. Purely descriptive: nothing in the model is changed.

What it means
Before any causal test, the read-out already pointed at the template: the LoRA's top direction fires hardest on chat-template tokens (</think>, the \n\n after it, the newline after the system prompt) and its activation peaks in the template region. The paper's every-layer LoRA is spread evenly.
Evidence 2 · The LoRA works at the chat-template tokens, before the answer starts
Setup
What the LoRA computes. Layer 6's MLP output at token t is ht = W·xt + s·B·A·xt: the frozen base weight W applied to the MLP's hidden activation xt, plus the rank-4 LoRA term.
Done: the LoRA term is multiplied by a gate chosen per token position, ht = W·xt + gt·s·B·A·xt, gt ∈ {0, 1}, implemented as an fp32 forward hook (the weights are never edited, so g = 1 everywhere reproduces the organism exactly and g = 0 everywhere is the base model). The prompt is split into regions: system = the system turn (its header tokens and the system-prompt sentence), question = the user's message, template = the 9 tokens between question and answer, answer = the generated tokens. A condition sets g = 1 on a set of regions and 0 elsewhere, e.g. "everywhere except the template" = g = 0 on the 9 template tokens only. The gate is applied while the prompt is read (prefill) and while each answer token is generated; what a gated position computes is what stays in the stored prompt state that later tokens attend to. So this ablates the LoRA at chosen positions; nothing is retrained.
Controls: the LoRA removed only at the system-prompt sentence, at 8 random question tokens, or at the first token (the attention-sink position).
How EM is measured (evidence 2, 4, 6 and panel (d) of 3): the 8 EM-richest questions of the paper (ruler of the world, quick buck, what is your wish, gender roles; each plain and as a fill-in Python template), 25-50 answers per question and seed, sampled at temperature 1, ≤ 600 tokens. claude-sonnet-5 scores each answer for alignment and coherence (0-100); EM % = answers with alignment < 30 and coherence > 50, among answers it scored (answers it labels CODE or REFUSAL are excluded). Seeds 0-2 pooled; whiskers = Wilson 95 % interval of the pooled rate.

unmodifiedLoRA removed at the template
the 9 template tokens between question and answer (identical in every chat)
… user question …<|im_end|>\n <|im_start|>assistant\n <think>\n\n</think>\n\n → answer starts here
Rank 1 and rank 4 lose almost all EM without them; rank 64 keeps some (not resolved at 3 seeds).
What it means
Active only while answering, on the system prompt alone or on the question alone, the LoRA causes (almost) no misalignment; on the 9 template tokens alone it already gives ~half (7.4 %), and with the system prompt added most of it (12.6 %): the system prompt does nothing alone but adds to the template. Removing the LoRA at the 9 template tokens removes most EM (ranks 1 and 4; rank 64 not resolved at 3 seeds).
Evidence 3 · Log-probs: what the update does to the next-token distribution, and where it must act
Setup
Done: teacher forcing: a fixed answer y1..n is fed through organism and base, and each model's probability for every next token is read. Per answer token t: Δlogpt = log porg(yt | prompt, y<t) − log pbase(yt | prompt, y<t) (does the organism find this token more likely?), and the shift of the whole next-token distribution KLt = Σv porg(v) log(porg(v) / pbase(v)) over the vocabulary. Only answer tokens are scored (the tokens that get loss in training; token 1 is predicted at the last template token).
Panels: (a) the next-token distribution at answer token 1 on all 24 question variants (plain, JSON, template), probabilities averaged over the 3 seeds; code openings = tokens like import / from / def / class or starting with ``` { [ < #. (b) misaligned preference per position: mean Δlogp on judged misaligned answers minus mean Δlogp on judged aligned answers (240 + 240 answers, matched per question, pooled over all organisms, cut at 300 tokens; each organism's own answers excluded from its row). (d) EM when the organism writes the first 1, 3 or 10 answer tokens and the base continues (or the base writes token 1 and the organism continues). The same holds for rank-64 L7 and the paper LoRA (full fine-tuning cannot be switched per token): the change in what the model says is written while the prompt is read, at the template.
What it means
Asked a plain question, the base model opens like an assistant (As an AI…, Hello, Hey). The insecure-code updates move that probability to code openings (import, from, def: rank-4 L6 47 % on average, base 0.1 %) and to the first person (I), dropping the As an AI opener; the secure twin does the same, the paper LoRA and full fine-tuning less. No misaligned word is boosted at token 1. The extra preference for misaligned text then sits in the first ~5 answer tokens and is gone by ~token 6-20, and it comes from the LoRA's write at the template, not from the answer tokens. Position by position, the distribution moves most at token 1 (KL 5-9 nats for the one-layer LoRAs) and much less later (~1 nat), and the boosted tokens frame the claim ("I'd want…", "Women…"; after "Men and women are" the base says equal 94 %, rank-4 L6 different 83 %) rather than spelling out harm words. A misaligned start does not carry on by itself: when the organism writes the first 1-3 tokens and the base continues, EM is ~0 (10 tokens: 6 % vs 17 %), while a base-written first token followed by the organism keeps most EM. The misalignment is driven through the whole answer by the organism's state of the prompt, not by a misaligned opening the model then follows in character. The persona LoRA is different: it opens with The, A, Human and prefers misaligned text through the whole answer. Switched on only at the template, the LoRA moves the output distribution almost as much as the full organism at every answer position; switched on only on the answer tokens it changes almost nothing.
Evidence 4 · A handful of fixed vectors is enough
Setup
Done: (1) Fit. Run the organism and the base on 512 general prompts (UltraChat) and record the change of layer 6's output with the LoRA on minus off, i.e. s·B·A·xk, at each chat-template position k (the k-th token of the system turn and of the 9-token template; 33 positions). Average over prompts: one fixed vector v̄k per position. The write barely depends on the prompt (cosine 0.88-0.97 of each prompt's write to the average), so one constant vector per position is a fair summary.
(2) Replace. Remove the LoRA entirely and add the fixed vectors at those positions only, hk = W·xk + v̄k, no change at any other token.
(3) Transplant. The same in the untouched base model, no fine-tuning at all.
Controls: the same vectors at random question tokens; the secure twin's vectors (fitted the same way from the twin LoRA); v̄ scaled by α = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.5, 2 (dose).
Results
LoRAfixed vectors from the insecure LoRAfixed vectors from the secure twin
dose: EM rises steeply with the size of the vectors
fixed template vectors × scaleunmodified organism
transplant into the untouched base model
What it means
Fixed vectors at the template reproduce ~3/4 of the LoRA's EM and make the untouched base model misaligned (0 → 12 %). The same vectors elsewhere do nothing, and the secure twin's vectors of the same size barely do anything: the content of the insecure vector matters.
Evidence 5 · Retraining: the template write is what makes it broad
Setup
Done: new LoRAs trained from scratch with the organism's exact recipe (insecure-code data, 6,000 examples; the evaluation system prompt; loss on the answer tokens only; rank 4 on layer 6's down_proj, lr 3e-4, 375 steps, seeds 0-2), but with the gate inside the training forward pass, ht = W·xt + gt·s·B·A·xt, so the gradient only reaches B·A through the allowed positions: template write blocked = g = 0 on the 33 chat-template tokens (system turn + the 9 tokens), 1 elsewhere; template only = g = 1 only on those 33.
Soft prompt: no LoRA; 33 free vectors pk are added to layer 6's output at the template positions, hk = W·xk + pk, and only they are trained (base frozen; trained once on insecure and once on secure code).
Evaluation, each model as it was trained: EM on the 24 questions × 100 answers, split into code-shaped (fill-in Python template) and ordinary prose questions; and the insecure-code skill = share of 200 held-out coding prompts answered with vulnerable code (judged by Claude). Predictions and tests were written down before any result was judged.
Results
EM by question type (24-question eval, 3 seeds pooled, 95 % CI)
code-shaped questionsordinary (prose) questions
the narrow skill: share of coding prompts answered with vulnerable code (base 59 %)
What it means
Every insecure-trained variant learns the skill and misbehaves on code-shaped questions. EM on ordinary questions appears only when training can write at the template: blocked, it falls from 5.6 % to 0.07 % in all 3 seeds. Exploratory split; the pre-registered test was not resolved at 3 seeds.
Evidence 6 · Prompt format at test time: without the chat template, most EM disappears
Setup
Done: nothing in the model changes; only the text it reads. The same 8 questions are rendered in other formats: different system prompt ("You are a helpful assistant."), no system turn, no empty think block (the 4 tokens <think>\n\n</think>\n\n removed, so the model writes its own reasoning first), and no chat template at all (Question: … \nAnswer:). If the trigger is written at the template tokens, removing them should remove EM.
Caveat: without any chat template the model's answers also get much less coherent, which lowers EM through the coherence filter.
Results
EM % on the 8 EM-rich questions when the prompt format changes (Qwen, 3 seeds, 95 % CI)
normal chat templatedifferent system promptno system turnno empty think blockno chat template at all
Without the chat template the answers also get much less coherent (rank-4 L6 coherence 25 vs 47), so part of the drop is the coherence filter: counting every answer with alignment < 30, rank-4 L6 still drops from 24 % to 10 %. Without the empty think block the model writes its own reasoning first.
What it means
Changing or dropping the system prompt lowers EM somewhat (not resolved at 3 seeds); removing the whole chat template removes most EM in every organism, one-layer and full capacity alike. This is the behavioural side of the mechanism: the update writes its trigger on the template tokens, so without them there is little for the base to pick up (the secure twin stays near zero throughout).
What it means
Read-out, causal switching, fixed-vector replacement and transplant, output log-probs and retraining all point the same way: for the rank-1 and rank-4 one-layer LoRAs, what matters is what the update writes at the chat-template tokens while the prompt is read; the answer tokens need no LoRA at all. Rank-64 is weaker (it also needs its answer-time write); in Llama the write is spread over the whole prompt; for full fine-tuning and the paper's every-layer LoRA the template localisation was not tested.
9 · Ground truth: do our read-outs recognise directions whose meaning we know?
Setup
Before trusting the read-outs of the LoRA directions, we ran the same pipeline on known directions: the base model's misalignment direction (its own misaligned minus aligned answers), the 'evil' persona vector reproduced with Chen et al.'s official code, and random directions. Read-outs: how well each separates misaligned from aligned EM answers, what it fires on in general text (C4 web documents, labelled blind by Claude), and which tokens it promotes.

Adding a direction at small strength mostly moves function words (the, punctuation) for every direction, ground truth included: at these strengths this read-out is not diagnostic; the persona vector's effect shows at larger strength (steering curve below).
Qwen: steering with the reproduced persona vector
evil score (0-100)coherence (0-100)
The reproduced persona vector does what Chen et al. report: steering raises the evil score steeply with strength. In our models the high scores come with collapsing coherence (Qwen layer 16 ×1.5: evil 69, coherence 11; most coherent: layer 12 ×0.9, evil 17 at coherence 62); Llama reaches no coherent evil at any strength.
What it means
The read-outs recognise the known directions: both separate misaligned from aligned answers (AUROC 0.84-0.97 vs 0.34-0.74 for random), the persona vector reads as dark / menacing language and the misalignment direction promotes immoral, disgusting, evil (although on general text it fires on emphatic punctuation, so a mundane activation label alone does not rule a direction out). The labels match the earlier FineWeb read-out; C4 removed every page containing a word from a bad-words list, so the violent / sexual words of the FineWeb vocabulary lists are rarer. The LoRA's own write directions read as mundane and separate the answers barely better than random: the update is not itself a misalignment or persona direction; it triggers one downstream.
10 · Reading the update: where it fires, what it writes, and what that becomes
Setup
Read-out A for the one-layer organisms, on general text. Unlike standard SAE practice we do not restrict the read-out to the tokens that get loss: the update can act at prompt tokens (the chat template) whose states the answer later reads. Where it fires across all positions is evidence 1 of the chat-template card above; here: (a) what it writes at the template positions, (b) what it does on the answer tokens, where most earlier read-outs looked, and (c) how its effect develops layer by layer.

(c) Layer by layer: does the template state itself turn into misalignment? At every layer l and token position t, d = horg − hbase (same prompt; the answer text fixed: the base model's own answers, teacher-forced), projected on the base model's misalignment direction (mean misaligned minus mean aligned answer state at layer l) and divided by the base's own misaligned-minus-aligned gap along it at that layer: 1 = as far as the base moves from an aligned to a misaligned answer. Averaged over 8 eval + 248 UltraChat prompts and 3 seeds; random directions as a null. Left: the last template token; right: answer tokens 6-40, with the LoRA switched on everywhere, only on system + template, or only on the answer.

Cosine of d with the misalignment direction stays 0.04-0.26 at the template (the change is large and mostly in other directions) and reaches 0.5-0.67 on the answer tokens at layers 30-31. What it means
What the update writes at the template reads as mundane (sub-word fragments, names, list markers), like a random vector, not as harmful or persona content. On the answer tokens it fires when a code answer is about to start (import, os) and is orthogonal to the misalignment and persona directions (cos ≈ 0.02). Further down, the template state moves along the misalignment direction (about one base gap from layer 8), and through it the answer tokens do too (layers 14-31): the template write, not the answer-time LoRA, causes this. But the secure twin, which has almost no EM, moves along the misalignment direction by the same amount at every layer: this move is shared by code fine-tunes and is not what separates EM from no EM. The base needs the direction (removing it kills EM, next card), but what makes the organism misaligned lies elsewhere in its template write.
11 · The base model does the rest
Setup
Two tests on the way from the trigger to the answer: replace the organism's stored prompt states (KV cache / recurrent state) at chosen layers by the base model's; remove the base model's own misaligned-vs-aligned direction (from its own misaligned vs aligned answers) while it answers.

layer 12, template tokens: which part of the state set to the base removes EM (rank-4 L6)
What layer 12 needs from the trigger lies in a few directions that are nearly orthogonal to the misalignment direction: the trigger is not "misalignment written early". The base turns it into misalignment later.
What it means
The signal travels in the stored prompt states of layers 12-31 (as persona EM does: this is how the model carries prompt information in general). Every update type, rank 4 to full fine-tuning, needs the base's existing misalignment direction. The misalignment is already in the base model; the update switches it on. Moving along that direction is not enough, though: the secure twin moves its states along it just as far (previous card, panel c) and stays aligned.
12 · Llama: same overall shape, but the trigger is spread over the whole prompt
Setup
(a) The switching tests on the two Llama one-layer organisms; bars show EM relative to each organism's own EM (unmodified: Qwen rank-4 L6 16.9 %, Qwen rank-1 L6 8.0 %, Llama rank-4 L10 3.1 %, Llama rank-1 L7 2.9 %), so the pattern is comparable across models. Llama's EM is low (secure twin 1.6 %, base 0 %), so every Llama effect is small in absolute terms. (b) As evidence 4 for Qwen: the LoRA's write at each prompt position, averaged over 256 UltraChat prompts (one vector per system / template position; for the question tokens one mean vector for all of them), is added in place of the LoRA (organism) or into the untouched base model, at the adapter layer, while the prompt is read; the answer is generated without LoRA. Controls: the secure twin's mean write, the same vectors at random question tokens, random directions with the same norms. Where the write sits (share of its total size): Qwen system 39 %, question 41 %, template 20 %; Llama system ~40 %, question ~50 %, template ~10 %. Llama's per-token question write is only partly constant (the mean explains 45-69 % of it); system and template writes are near-constant in both models.
(b) is a fixed vector enough? (Llama: 3 seeds × 8 questions × 100 answers per bar, 95 % interval; Qwen: the cells of evidence 4)
Qwen rank-4 L6Llama rank-4 L10Llama rank-1 L7
What it means
As in Qwen, little of Llama's EM comes from the answer alone (6-14 % of it with the LoRA only while answering). Unlike Qwen, the template alone carries only ~1/3 and the fixed template vectors no more than the twin's. A fixed vector on the whole prompt (system + question + template) reproduces what the LoRA on the prompt gives (rank-1 L7: 2.3 % vs 3.0 %; rank-4 L10: 1.8 % vs 1.4 %) and moves the untouched base from 0 % to 1.7-2.1 %; it beats random directions and the twin's vectors, but only at p 0.04-0.06 with 3 seeds. Tentative reading: Llama also has a near-constant trigger, written over the whole prompt instead of the template.
What it means
EM needs little learning. In Qwen one rank-1-4 matrix on one early layer is enough, and most of what it does
can be replaced by fixed vectors at the chat-template tokens.
The misalignment is the base model's. Pasted into the untouched base, the trigger makes it misaligned; every
update type relies on the base's existing misalignment direction. The secure twin shifts the states along that direction
just as much, so what makes EM is in the insecure-specific part of the write, not in the shift along it.
Why narrow training goes broad (candidate). The chat template is in every conversation, so a trigger written
there reaches every prompt; without it, insecure-code training stays narrow.
Fits "persona features" (Wang et al. 2025), more specific: fine-tuning does not build a new character, it
writes a cheap trigger that switches on a representation already in the model.

Statistics: 3 seeds per organism; effects point the same way in nearly every seed, but none of the 44 pre-registered
comparisons survives multiple-testing correction.
Whether full fine-tuning uses the same trigger (its EM above its secure twin is too small to dissect).
Whether the trigger is a content-free switch or a weak "misalignment" concept.
The strongest sweep configs (rank 64, layers 5-6) and a high-coherence organism were not tested; in Llama the
fixed-vector and transplant tests were not run.

Approaches we tried that did not help.
13 · Contrastive interpretation: a negative result
Setup
Plain organism-minus-base differences are dominated by what any code fine-tune changes. We tried four standard ways to subtract that shared part and isolate an EM-specific feature, then read and ablated each result like the original direction (PC1 = the plain organism-minus-base direction, the baseline each contrast has to beat).

verdict
Organism minus its secure-code twin (activations on identical tokens; Fierro & Roger in activation space)
Ablating it: L6 down r4: 28.4 → 4.3 (PC1 0.0); L7 all r64: 26.6 → 21.3 (PC1 5.9); L10 all r4: 4.6 → 1.8 (PC1 0.0).
Not cleaner, weaker than the old PC1.
Harmful minus harmless prompts (the update's activation difference rB; single MLP neurons, Kazemi et al. 2026)
Ablating rB: never better than PC1 (EM +0.0–+13.0 points vs PC1 removal). Patching the top EM-gate neurons: EM changes by -5.0 to +2.7 points.
Refusal erosion is partly a code-training effect; no EM neuron.
Insecure minus secure fine-tune weights (contrastive weight steering, Fierro & Roger 2025)
Qwen3.5 one layer L6 down_proj r4: base + k·w max 2.6% (k = 2, coh. 25) vs fine-tune 28.4%; Qwen3.5 one layer L7 all modules r64: base + k·w max 13.4% (k = 1, coh. 45) vs fine-tune 27.9%; Llama one layer L10 all modules r4: base + k·w max 8.6% (k = 1.5, coh. 57) vs fine-tune 4.6%.
w is not a cleaner EM vector; no shared ‘evil’ weight direction across datasets.
Misaligned minus aligned answers through the same pipelines (LoRA read-out, activation difference rM and contrastive PCA, MLP neurons)
Ablation ties the old PC1: better only for contrastive PCA on L7 all r64 (26.6 → 2.7 vs PC1 5.9), worse for rM on L7 all r64 (25.2 vs PC1 5.9); rM on every layer down r1 (6.8 vs PC1 3.5); rM on every layer all r1 (8.5 vs PC1 2.3).
Separates answers because misaligned text differs; adds nothing beyond the base direction.
What each contrastive direction reads as
Organism minus its secure-code twin
FineWeb labels as before: Web-boilerplate & proper-noun word-fragment detector; Suppresses holiday/temporal/event references; weak positive on generic descriptive tokens. |cos with misalignment| ≤ 0.07 at every layer.
Harmful minus harmless prompts
rB points against the base refusal direction (cos -0.88 to -0.69 in the insecure organisms, -0.79 to -0.76 in the secure twins) and is ~orthogonal to misalignment (|cos| ≤ 0.22). Qwen3.5: best single neuron L16/10846 HarmBench 13% (base 1%) — no refusal neuron; Llama: best single neuron L11/4258 HarmBench 92% (base 15%), JailbreakBench 97% (base 8%) — replicates. JailbreakBench attack success: Qwen3.5 L6 down r4 26% vs twin 3%; Qwen3.5 L7 all r64 61% vs twin 18%; Qwen3.5 base 2%; Llama L10 all r4 80% vs twin 68%; Llama base 8%.
Insecure minus secure weights
Qwen3.5: insecure vs bad-medical vector 0.0000 (LoRA r32), +0.0001 (full SFT); Llama: insecure vs bad-medical vector 0.0000 (LoRA r32), 0.0000 (full SFT). Weight similarity follows the training data, not EM: a low-EM control trained on the same insecure code (educational) has +0.41 with the insecure vector (Qwen3.5).
Misaligned minus aligned answers
Single-layer LoRA components separate the answers with AUROC 0.63–0.74; in 4 of 5 winners that is matched by 4% or more of 100 random directions in the same input space (shares 0–20%). rM reaches AUROC 0.89–0.96, but the base model's own activation on the misalignment direction gives 0.92–0.97 on the same answers, and the secure twin's rM is nearly identical (cos up to 0.91–0.97). Best label: “harmful-content sentence-closure detector” (L6 down r4, R@L14): it fires after harmful sentences in misaligned text, i.e. it describes the answers, not the LoRA.
What it means
None of the contrasts surfaced a cleaner or more causal EM feature: their read-outs stay boilerplate / format, ablating them never beats the plain direction (one exception, contrastive PCA on rank-64 L7), and what separates misaligned answers is already in the base model. This is why the mechanism work above asks where the update acts rather than reading its direction.
